The market indices continued to move sideways with index heavy counters ending almost flat. However, high retail activity brought a lively temper to the market which lasted throughout the day. The broader market index, the All Share Price Index (ASPI) closed a marginal 0.33% (22.71 points) lower whilst the Milanka Price Index (MPI) lost 0.25% (15.89 points) over Fridays’ close. The ASPI & the MPI ended the day at 6,967.62 points & 6,271.04 points respectively.
Market activity levels narrowed down to some extent with fewer large parcel trades taking place in the market today. Total market turnover for the day was LKR.2.30Bn. The top contributors to the days’ turnover were Tess Agro, Ascot Holdings, John Keells Holdings, United Motors & Dipped Products. The five top contributors accounted for close to 43% of the days’ total turnover.
Tess Agro (TESS) saw it’s share price surge by 30% (LKR.1.20) over Fridays’ close with more than 65Mn shares changing hands. The counter generated the highest turnover for the day of LKR.312.45Mn. High retail activity was seen on TESS which closed the day at LKR.5.20.
Ascot Holdings (ASCO) was the highest gainer of the day, recording a noteworthy gain of 31.01% (LKR.42.20). A volume of 1.49Mn shares of ASCO transacted during the day generating a turnover of LKR.252.69Mn. Two crossings of 154,000 shares & 150,000 shares took place at prices of LKR.150.00 & LKR.160.00 respectively. The counter traded at a high of LKR.192.00 & a low of LKR.150.00 before ending the day at LKR.178.30.
Premier blue chip, John Keells Holdings (JKH) generated a turnover of LKR.154.89Mn on the back of over of aa solitary crossing of 700,000 shares taking place at a price of LKR.215.00. JKH closed at LKR.214.60 for the day, losing a trivial 0.23% (LKR.0.50).
United Motors (UML) continued to attract high investor interest. The counter closed at LKR.174.50, rising by 0.63% (LKR.1.10) over the previous days’ close. A quantity of 836,300Mn shares changed hands today generating a turnover of LKR.152.35Mn.
Foreigners ended the day as net sellers with foreign sales worth of LKR.309.29Mn against foreign purchases of LKR.76.38Mn, resulting in a net foreign outflow of LKR.232.90Mn.
